NFL Team Clinicians Gather To Enhance Player Support

NFL team clinicians gathered July 11–12 at an annual summit to identify ways to better help players, make themselves more accessible, and earn players’ trust.

The Annual NFL Team Clinician Summit brought together the clinicians and representatives from NFL Players Association, The Trust, and Cigna. During workshops and sessions at the NFL League Office in New York, attendees discussed:

  • New tactics and tools for more effective interactions with players.
  • Protecting player confidentiality.
  • Applying a model for ethical decision-making.
  • Best practices for integrating team clinicians within the club.
  • New resources and support for players and clubs.

Participants were joined by Freddie Scott, a transition coach and NFL Legend, and Doug Middleton, a mental health advocate and current player, who shared their perspectives on mental wellness.

The 2022 summit was the first time the group met since the pandemic began, and many clinicians were meeting their peers in person for the first time. The event was an opportunity to make professional connections and collaborate on how best to serve NFL players and Legends. It also created a channel for continued dialogue.
